15 Wars and Their Years
For the trial we're learning 15 wars and the year each one started.
We're using start year. Many of these wars also have a famous end year (1945 for WWII, 1865 for the Civil War). Don't confuse them. The exam asks for the start.
Tolerance on the exam is ±1 year. So if the answer is 1914 you can type 1913, 1914, or 1915 and get credit. (We're being generous on purpose — the goal is roughly when, not the exact day.)
The list
| # | War | Started | One-line why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | American Revolutionary War | 1775 | Thirteen colonies break from Britain. |
| 2 | War of 1812 | 1812 | US vs. Britain again, on the seas and the Great Lakes. |
| 3 | Mexican-American War | 1846 | US gains California, the Southwest, Texas border. |
| 4 | American Civil War | 1861 | Union vs. Confederacy, ends slavery in the US. |

| 7 | Russo-Japanese War | 1904 | First time an Asian power beats a European one in modern war. |
| 8 | World War I | 1914 | Industrial-scale war shatters European empires. |

| 11 | World War II | 1939 | Largest war in history. |
| 12 | Korean War | 1950 | First hot conflict of the Cold War. |
| 13 | Vietnam War | 1955 | (US "involvement era" begins; some sources say 1954 or 1959.) |
| 14 | Gulf War | 1990 | Iraq invades Kuwait; coalition pushes them out in 1991. |
| 15 | Iraq War | 2003 | US-led invasion ends Saddam Hussein's regime. |
A note on Vietnam
The Vietnam War's start year is genuinely fuzzy:
- 1954 — French withdrawal after Dien Bien Phu (start of the partition).
- 1955 — typical "official" US start (advisors arriving).
- 1959 — North Vietnam's communist party authorizes armed struggle.
- 1965 — large-scale US ground troops.
We're using 1955 with ±1 tolerance. If you write 1954 or 1956 you get credit.
How to memorize 15 dates
Group them. The dates fall into clusters:
- Late 1700s / early 1800s — American era: 1775, 1812.
- Mid-1800s — slavery and expansion: 1846, 1861.
- Late 1800s — empire era: 1870, 1898.
- Early 1900s — modern war: 1904, 1914, 1917.
- 1930s-50s — totalitarian era and Cold War start: 1936, 1939, 1950, 1955.
- Late 20th–early 21st — modern conflicts: 1990, 2003.
If you can place a war in its cluster, you're already within ±1.
